It has come to my attention that the parameters of "homework" is a bit cloudy and I have had a conversation with the students about their responsibilities for completing work.
If a student is taking a long time to complete their work, then maybe the question that needs to be asked is, "What am I doing in class, when I should be working on my assignment?"
90% of "homework" is classwork that needs to be finished at home and returned the next day, students still need to show parents completed work and share notebooks to show what concepts they are working on.
These are the general guidelines:
iReady Reading and Math: 2 lessons of each need to be completed by Friday. I give students time in class to work toward this goal.
Dreambox: 4 lessons due by Friday. This is a fast finisher item, but often is a homework item.
IDRJ (4th): 16-20 Entries are due each week, Broken down, this is about 4-5 entries per day. When students finish work, this is one of the items to begin in class. In order to stay on top of work, I put this as a homework reminder.
VOCAB/ ROOTs: Work is started in class. Finished at home. Students will have a menu of items coming up and will be given 1 weeks time to complete the work. All vocab quizzes are given on Wednesday.
Math: Usually most work is completed in class. Test corrections are due 3-4 days after the test is given.
Science and History: Classwork/ homework is to be completed and ready the following day.
