Tour the U.S. Regions Travel Agency Project
Key learning objectives: Physical features (mountain ranges, rivers, lakes, oceans, deserts, etc.) that have, and continue to, impact human lives.
It's important that students understand the physical geography of the United States before they start learning about the story of our country. After our introductory unit on geography, students will later know the answer to questions about Native American regions, the thirteen colonies, the American Revolution and Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery. Geography is essential to understanding each period of American history. Key geographic features that aid the understanding of 5th grade American history are: The Appalachian Mountains, The Rocky Mountains, The Sierra Nevada Mountains, The Mississippi River, The Missouri River and The Columbia River. These will all be referred to later. Students will also learn about the Great Lakes, The Rio Grande River, The Colorado River and more. |
